Seminar at IMHX2004

Earlier this year, Stuart Naish and Peter Baker presented a talk about the latest developments in the design of Distribution Centres since the introduction of the concept of Agility has been adopted as a strategic development.

First of all, the question of what actually constitutes a supply chain strategy was examined. The paper then went on to present some research findings from Cranfield School of Management on the extent to which the perceived benefits of modern supply chain concepts are actually being achieved. Stuart and Peter then explored what is needed in physical terms, particularly with regard to distribution centre design, to turn these strategies into reality. Various case studies were used to illustrate the designs, materials handling equipment requirements and operations needed to support some of the concepts that are currently being implemented. This provided a valuable insight as to what type of investment in physical facilities is needed to support these modern supply chain concepts.
